OSMOSIS JONES   Print  E-mail

Frank is a typical, overweight , American Slob - and he's putting his body through hell. And doesn't his body know it....

Because in the meantime, there's an entire animated civilization (called "Frank") living in his body , led by Mayor Phlegmming.. So "Osmosis Jones" is a twist on the 60's sci-fi movie "Fantastic Voyage", if you will.

Osmosis Jones is a white blood cell, of the Frank police Department, whose job it is to wipe out germs and diseases. But he's taken of more than he can chew when a super ambitious germ crosses his path....and then, and only then, does the pumped up superhero drug Drix come to the rescue.

But there's more to it than that: Frank's body is run like any major city. Mayor Phlegmming is trying to keep his seat, there's news channels, police forces, drug dealers & card sharks, and every buddy cop movie cliché to boot:, the evil bad guy (the unfortunately named Thrax) , Osmosis' thwarted love affair with the Mayor's secretary...the list is endless. While it's a kids movie, what other kids movie seemsto gain all its jokes from every bodily function imaginable, avalanches of snot included?

As can be expected from a Farrelly brothers movie, there's plenty of gross out moments that quickly becomes tiresome. The Animation is especially found wanting when Toy Story 2 et al raised the benchmark; but there you go.

Its vivid and colourful, and with an inventive plot idea, but hampered with a limp unengaging script and insipid Characters : Osmosis Jones himself (Chris Rock) is a wisecracking stereotypical cop whose jokes fall flatter than a skyscraper. Its unengaging and deeply uneven, with the mixture of live-action and animation intercut with each other simply jarring.

Though a great many jokes will pass you by on first viewing, Its not even a 10th of the film that the far superior and far funnier "Rocky and Bullwinkle" is. And that sure is saying something...
