MINISTRY - Houses Of The Mole   Print  E-mail
Written by Mark Reed

A concept album about Fear of the Letter "W"? Or is that fear of "Dubya"? No. The best metal album of the year.

Ministry should be shit. What else should be a band be, 22 years into it's career, but a bunch of dull bland, meaningless junkies recording albums as an excuse to tour?

A Wednesday night at a half-empty Astoria in London constitutes a ‘tour', one print interview in MetalHammer for press, and a few thousand copies floating around the high street at £16.99 in HMV for the next seven years. What a career.

But they're clean. And this is their best album, ever. A fantastic, 58 minute vomitious purge of rage that shits on bands half their age.

Most records don't have the balls to do what this lot do : the opening number is a sly tune called "No W", set in a fantasy world without George Dubya Bush. And this is the way the world ends, not with a whimper. But with a bang :

A thrash metal welding of "Carmen Buruna" with sliced up speeches of George Bush - choice cuts from the President Savant's idiot lips. Add guitars and screaming and you've got some idea of what its all about. A stunning, articulate, yet wordless trashing of everything that is wrong with America today -

"Ask me why you're feeling screwed : And I'll give you the answer

There's a Colon Dick & Bush, hammering away"

- is about as much as I can make out of the rampant, stream-of-consciousness lyrics, ejaculated with such speed and fury you think the CIA are battering down the door to the recording studio to silence the dissident voices.

In an age of the bland, where every artist is too chickenshit scared to speak out against this Presidential madness, Ministry are the only ones exercising the right to freedom of speech. "Houses Of The Mole" is to music, what "Farenheit 9/11" is to cinema. It is a thorough, relentless political howl of rage. We need this.

If you don't use it, it goes away. It's always been that way. Think of "Houses Of The Mole" as the violent use of the Freedom of Speech ever. Fuck the PRMC. Fuck Parental Advisory : Explicit Content. Life is explicit.

This is the best, most important record any American rock band will make all year. A record unafraid. A record made by Patriots : people who love their country and hate what is happening to it. Silence is death. This is the sound of democracy. This is the sound of freedom. This is the sound of freedom of speech. Love it, or lose it. The choice is yours.
