KURT COBAIN - Journals   Print  E-mail
Written by Mark Reed
Sunday, 17 October 2004

Goddamit. This is wrong. So wrong. This is like reading the diary of your best friend and realising that he’s as mundane, dull, and fucked up as you are. It breaks every last ounce of credibility that Courtney Love has : she’s auctioning off the inner thoughts of a dead man who would, no doubt, be horrified to know that his wife is bankrolling his neurosis now her career has dried up.

Maybe that’s why Chris Novoselic refuses to read it.

“If you read it, you’ll judge” it says, scrawled in some immature pen. But who we judge is not Cobain. But Courtney. A fading, falling half-star, doomed to disintegrate on re-entry into the real world, trying to insulate themselves from their inevitable fall and their status as a has-been. A woman who sold the most private thoughts of her suicidal husband to the highest bidder.

Because she has nothing left to sell. Being a widow is not a long-term career option. It didn’t even work for Yoko. And nobody’s interested in a temperamental, not very successful artist who hasn’t had a hit in years.

But the “Kurt Cobain’s Journals” aren’t that. They’re not journals. They were never meant to be read. They’re the disjointed, half-formed notebook rambling of a mid-US nobody who became an icon junkie rock star. Self-disgust is self-obsession honey, and Cobains favourite subject is always, always, always himself, existing in his own, insular world of punk rock poverty and an inferiority complex larger than the sun.

Letters are malformed, words mis-spelt, shrunken, twisted. Everything in Kurt Cobains world is crushed and mutated. Not only is it physically difficult to decipher the meaning from the boyish scrawl, This should never have been published. It has no artistic merit in terms of content, there is no moral justification for its publication, and is nothing more, and nothing less, than graverobbing.

And if that sounds harsh, then fuck it. That’s the impression I get here. On cheap notebook paper, scrawled in biro, Cobain makes friends with old vinyl records and his insecurities, obsessing over his own flaws, pitying his lot, obsessed with his fears : women, sex, security. He painted himself as a victim for so long, adopted the role as his own, and when fortune smiled upon him, he simply switched neurosis’ to another object of disgust : his own self-disgust was such that his perception of reality would not allow him to tolerate himself as anything but a victim. And so he invented narcolepsy to absolve his problems, complained of a legendary yet possibly non-existent stomach ailment, and became the kind of tedious bore that the truly self-obsessed become.

Ultimately, what these disjointed, non-linear, scrawls from a self-obsessed, self-disgusted, immature genius prove is that nothing is more tedious than depression. Every page is a variation upon the themes of inadequacy, fear, and a hatred : of himself, of others, of everything. Kurt’s blind spot is that his prejudices against others were exactly the same brand of ignorant fear that he despised in others.

“Kurt Cobain's Journals” are a travesty. Aside from the odd, rare striking image that rises from the page, the quality of the writing, and the contents are dire, shopping list stuff. And these are the highlights. Penguin, hang your heads in shame. Courtney, blow your head off with a shotgun. Readers, stick with the records. Don’t fund this kind of heartless exploitation. It should have never been published. It should never be bought. It should never be read. It’s heartless graverobbing exploitation of the dead who cannot defend themselves.

“Go on, take everything, take everything, I want you to
Go on, take everything, take everything, I dare you to”

- Hole, Violet.

It was never meant to be read but more so it should never be sold. That bitch should either burn it or give it to someone with a ounce of compassion for Kurt. Anyone who wasn't just trying to make a quick dollar and truly cared about him would stop that junkie slut!!!! :x :x :x

:( :( :(

I have been reading everything there is to read about Kurt, I have not bought the journals and don't plan too. More then anything it just upsets me that everyone thinks he commited suicide. There is very little evedence either way. No figer prints on the gun, not gloves on Kurts hands, humm. Why would someone kill him? If you take into perspective what the so called "suicide note" is actually about, it's about how he was done with his Fame, he just couldn't do it anymore. That being said to Courtney he is worth more dead then alive! He wouldn't have left frances in this world without a father. Think about what Courtney just did, she sold his personal journals! If Courtney read them when Kurt was alive he would have been upset, let alone selling them for 4 million and having people critises his writing ability and the nature of the journals themselves. It isn't a book, it is someones life and nobody is perfect!

The bottom line is any murder can look like a suicide if someone inject the drug user with a gram and a half of herion, blows his head off and writes in a few extra lines on his resignation to the editor.
Kurt Donald Cobain.

I have been reading the comments left on this page and I think most of you have no idea what you're talking about. How can you go off saying that the person who published Kurt's journal had no compassion? You can't. They were published as a way for his fans to learn about Kurt's inner most self. The self he locked away for so long, the self that nobody knew. And as far as Krist Novoelic's name goes, he spells his name differently because of this. In 1992 he changed the spelling of his name from Chris to Krist because it is the original spelling of his Croatian birth name. Kurt Cobain was NOT murdered. If you people say that you are such great fans of Kurt Cobain, then you would know of his talk since he was 12 years old about getting famous and then killing himself, he said "I'm going to be famous and then kill myself, going down in a blaze of glory just like Jim Morrison." I am only 16 years old, at the time of his death I was 4. Yet, I still know more about him than people who say "I've read all his books, I saw them live." So on and so on. I have the passion to know him, understand him, go deep down into his mind and realize that he wasn't just a grunge rocker, but a genius. Some of you just have to learn a little more about the "Last Rock Star" before you open your mouths. :grin

Nirvana vs. Foo Fighters..
That's no contest. Dave, no doubt, is an amazing musician, but you can never compare these two or even say the Foo Fighters are better.

he did kill himself, its like a prophecy that goes round, if you've read his journals, then you'd realise that he did kill himself.... they're very sad.
anyone who keeps a journal knows full well to omit stuff they dont want seen, unless they live alone, so writing a journal entails alot more than people think, you dont write your deepest darkest secrets if people can find them
I now hate fans of Nirvana.

I agree completely with this review and find it somewhat enlightening to look at Kurt as what he really was, without holding any punches. It's true. He was immature, he was hateful of himself, he was overly depressed (from this perspective) and over protective of himself (bought guns all the time).

Before this comment is finished, I want to say FUCK YOU to all the fans who posted here. Especially huge FUCK YOU to "xnevermindx", the pretentious asshole who thinks he actually knows this guy. I seriously hope xnevermindx is practicing for satirical comedy, or else he'd better practice how to take a punch of the face in the future.

Courtney is an evil fuck, Kurt was immature but made great music. I vow never to read this shit, it truly is graverobbing. That's the best description it can be applied to.

Kurt is a genius that was placed in a series of unfortunate circumstances that made him into the disturbed, self-destructive person he was. He grew up in a broken family, in a town full of people who didnt get him. He was a fucked up person, but he is still my greatest inspiration. His need for compasion was never truly filled when he broke from tracy, if courtney gave two shits about him he might still be here. She is the one who diserves to get her brains blown out. These journals to me are not a way to exploit kurt, they are a way for me to understand a great man who i never got the plesure to meet. Kurts legacy should be presurved in a museum and not in the private colections of rich people. His greatness shall never die. If it's illegal to rock n' roll then throw me in jail.
Pathetic...

I think the reason he kept them locked away for so long is because he didn't want anyone to know about them, to see that side of himself. That's obvious, but I guess a person's "fans" have some supposed right to know shit Kurt himself really didn't want anyone to know. Instead the "fans" spew bullshit about how he "touched more hearts" than Mother Theresa apparently, as if that was what he set out to do. The "fans" should have some respect for the dead. Contributing to this makes you little more than voyeurs, accomplices in the last bit of graverobbing available to Love. Thanks for continuing the exploitation of someone you supposedly admire so much.

Umm, I'm not surprised that you guys who are dissing it say you've "never read it".
The scribbles are not deadly personal, they are recipes, t-shirt ideas, letters, cartoons, stories, musings, and insights.
It's not as personal as you think. It opens saying,
"When you wake up this morning, please read my diary. Go through my things, and figure me out."
:) Fuck haterrs, me and him got the same handwriting, too♥
