JONNY GREENWOOD - 'There Will Be Blood'   Print  E-mail

As far from Radiohead as a man can get?

Jonny Greenwood’s second album is far removed from his work in Radiohead. Make no mistake - this is about as far from Radiohead as one can get. “There Will Be Blood” is an unobtrusive, thirty three minute journey  in minimalism that no doubt works very well as the soundtrack to the film of the same name, but fails as a musical listening experience to engage the listened at any deep level. The performance by the BBC Concert Orchestra (and others) is strong but the material lacks any personality and fails to be memorable unlike the truly successful film score. The music is haunting, atmospheric, but lacking in any distinctive voice or style. That said, in the context of the film it is probably highly successful in its intention to complement the original images with matching music. I doubt that this record would sit in most of its owners homes were it not for Greenwood’s role in Radiohead and is reminiscent of many long-obscure names in the field of minimalist music he clearly takes inspiration from.
