"I feel the need...the need for speed"
That's this movie in 8 words.
That's something Tom Cruise said in the testosterone frenzy of Top Gun. Now imagine; Its not F-15's, it's Ferrari's , but otherwise it's the same; living on the edge, the maverick authority figures, the roar of engines, the thrill of speed. Plotwise, it's "Point Break" in a nutshell. Boy meets car -- boy meets racing gang -car meets car- car chases. Now throw in a mix of triads, intergang rivalry, minimal characterisation, carjackers stealing lorryloads of consumer goods, and some dazzling visual pyrotechnics and that's the movie ina nutshell. Only, add testosterone. Lots of it.
Vin Diesel (Pitch Black) stars as Dom, ex-con who attracts the attentions of mechanic Brian (Paul Walker), who ingratiates himself into his close knit circle of street racers, of whom Dom is the head honcho. What Dom doesn't know is that Brian is an undercover cop assigned to solving the lorry hijackings that are taking place...
So all in all, it's a lot of fast cars. A hell of a lot of flashy cars. The idea of man and machine melding together In a dazzling array of effects and kinetic, vivid race sequences, on the edge stunt driving, and a final shoot-out and car chase (watch for the ramps there to make the car jumps look more exciting tho') that takes all of its ideas from car chase classics such as Bullit, Ronin, and MI:2 .
All in all, its exciting, its dumb, its testosterone filled, and a boon for all you Max Power readers out there. Boys and their toys eh? It's perfect if you ever had fun smashing up your matchbox and dinky toy cars into walls as a young un, but then regretted growing up. Well, that's what this movie is about : making the most exciting scenes from Playstation faves like "Driver" and "Grand Theft Auto" into reality.
Yeah, its silly, yeah its visually exciting, but it ain't art. It ain't rocket science either. It does exactly what it says on the tin. At over 140mph......
