Closer than you think. Or would like...
Based on the works of novelist Hanesh Kureshi, writer of "Buddha of Surburbia" and "The Black Album", "Intimacy" is the diary of an illicit love affair gone wrong, of unfulfilled hopes and desires.
But If you're expecting romance, this isn't it: Its probably closer to "Nil by Mouth" or "Trainspotting" with a grim, strangely realistic look at aimless, fleeting, emotionless relationships. Not to mention a notorious blowjob scene passed by the BBFC.
Timothy Spall as the cuckolded husband in a sexless marriage is particularly outstanding in this, fully aware of every single act of unfaithfulness by his wife (Kerry Fox, of "Shallow Grave") with her lover Jay (Mark Rylance) yet he is so loving and forgiving, so willing to look the other way throughout. It may be grim, unrelenting and bleak, but it's a compelling, sympathetic story with characterisation that lets us understand their motivations, as well as their flaws; and fortunately devoid of the light comedy that often mars such films.
One of the best, but harrowing , British films in recent years. if you don't come out of it feeling soiled, then there's something wrong with you!
